you've got romney obama debate. big bird. >> and jobs. so we see the focus on it was mostly about the economy, you see the focus on the substance of this debate as opposed to just the zingers and squabbling between the candidates and i was fascinated by the role of xbox. >> xbox is a controller you can use in your living room to play games on your television set and there's a subscription called xbox live. you can play with people by using a game controller. well, what happened last night is that xbox decided to let the video of the debate stream and they posed questions to gameers saying "at this moment who would you vote for?" immediately you had obama 75% of the gamers say yes or mitt romney 10% of the gamers say yes. it's a big figure but you get the point. >> even though this is only about 10,000 participated in this microsoft game, these are mostly younger men, 18 to 29 not plugged into politics who are harder to reach and the fact that they were engaged in answering these questions about presidential debate i think is a watershed m

effective for president obama. he's used spanish-speaking volunteers talking about the issues, talking to other people in the community about that. just kind of one-to-one thing that really helps build trust in the hispanic community. this is someone we can trust. >> woodruff: greg allen joining us with a look at what both campaigns are doing to reach hispanic voters. thanks very much. >> my pleasure. >> ifill: tune in tomorrow night for special pbs' coverage of the first presidential debate, moderated by jim lehrer. mark shields and david brooks will join judy and me for real time analysis at 9:00 p.m. eastern time. but our coverage begins at noon online, when we begin live stream coverage with interviews on policy, a politics preview and a live blog throughout the debate itself. the conversation continues after the debate ends at a google-plus hangout with undecided battleground state voters. >> woodruff: there are new developments today in the benghazi consulate attack as congressional committee leaders turn up

here for the 2008 obama-mccain it be. but it doesn't always work. >> the debate in 2004 between john kerry and george w. bush i, i literally forgot whether or not-- uh-oh, is this a new question or is this a follow-up question? my mind just went blank. and i had to make a decision. and i just guessed right. >> brown: the book highlights so-called major moments in debate history, the ones that come to define an dispnt sometimes ape candidate. george h.w. bush looking at his watch in 1992. >>Ñi thereçóñr guagain. >> brown: those zingers from ronald reagan that wounded jimmy cartener 1980. in the documentary "debating our destiny" jim went back to talk to candidates about their experience of the debates and had the chance to ask whether they prepared famous lines ahead of time. >> lehrer: i asked ronald reagan about, "there you go again," and a couple of others. "no, no, it just came to me." >> no it just seemed to be the thing to say and what he was saying up there. >> brown: did you believe him? >> lehrer: i don't know

i mean biden obama as a team at this point. but i think that the president, is just going to forget the first debate and be ready in the second one to make his case. and to engage. he wasn't ingauged. if you turn down the sound on wednesday night and just watch those two people, he is did not look happy to be there. and mitt romney did. >> what about the vice president, are the expectations now raised, as mark says. >> i think so. >> in part there is a little more pressure on joe biden because as mark said he has to do well. and hyperactive joe biden is a high risk proposition. it could turn out well and i happen to think he's pretty good debater. de well, i thought against sarah palin. de well when he ran for president. he's an eloquent guy who in the big debates has always been a very controlled figure. but paul ryan has what mitt romney had, which is the ability to real off number after number. and again i'm struck by the fact that you can get wonky this year. people somehow seem to want that. and ryan certainly has that cap

the obama campaign is also pointing to some revised job numbers to make its case. the u.s. bureau of labor statistics said yesterday there were nearly 400,000 more jobs created in the previous year that ended in march. that would mean that there are a higher number of jobs than when president obama took office. but the u.s. still has four million fewer jobs since before the collapse of the financial sector. there's other sobering data as well, showing a still sluggish recovery. the commerce department revised its estimate of second-quarter economic growth down yesterday from 1.7%. mitt romney seized on the change in springfield, virginia. >> we are at 1.3%. this is... this is unacceptable. >> woodruff: other economic indicators also paint a mixed picture. the stock market itself, while down today, has been climbing in recent weeks to its highest levels in nearly five years. today, the dow jones industrial average lost almost 49 points after a weak manufacturing report and worries over europe to close just over 13,437. and the housing market may be stabilizing. a key index s
